Dal Vada (also known as Masala Vada) is one of the preferred snack in India. Usually made up of chana dal but moog dal variant or a mixture of both are also popular. Served with coconut chutney or tomato ketchup followed by a hot cup of tea or coffee.
INGREDIENTS
2 cups chana dal - soaked in water for 2-3 hours 3 medium sized onions - finely chopped 1/2 cup coriander leaves - finely chopped 1 teaspoon mixed masala (ajwain, coriander seeds & cumin seeds) - coarsely ground 10-12 curry leaves - finely chopped |
1/4 inch ginger - finely chopped 2-3 flakes garlic - cushed to form coarse paste 4-6 green chilies Common salt - as per taste Cooking oil - for deep frying |
PROCEDURE
Remove excess water from soaked dal & very very coarsely grind it along with green chilies. Mix copped onions, chopped coriander leaves, chopped curry leaves, chopped ginger, crushed garlic, mixed masala & salt into it.
Make lemon sized balls and gently press between your palms to flatten them to shape them into so called "vada" shape. Heat cooking oil in a pan and deep fry on a medium heat until they look golden brown. Serve hot with tomato ketchup or coconut chutney.
